Susan and her friends sample the delights of the coil-pot technique as part of her hen party celebrations. The girls produced a range of jugs, candle holders and decorative pots which we’ll dry, fire and glaze in time for Susan’s big day.
Regular visitors to this blog will know we host oodles of pottery hen parties and they are always fantastic events. Saturday’s was no exception – lovely people creating and creating in a lovely atmosphere! More examples of pottery hen parties here.

This beautifully modelled ‘happy’ face was made by a young child at Washwood Heath Nursery School in Birmingham. I was particularly taken by the detail: Cheeks, moustache, beard and eye lashes were all carefully added or drawn into the clay slab.
The children and staff are exploring notions of the self and we chose to use clay to explore facial expressions and associated emotions.
Recently spent a magnificent couple of days working with YR1 at Elmbridge Infants School in Gloucester.
The School has a fantastic outdoor environment and comitment to outside learning. (As you wonder around the forest school area and secret garden, you have no idea you are but a stones throw from the city centre.)
In a bid to enhance the grounds even further, we constructed a turf sofa from clay, earth, sandbags and straw. Very muddy, very messy but great fun. All 72 children contributed 100% as did a band of enthusiastic and willing parents – great stuff!
On day two we abandoned the great outdoors and bright sunshine and returned to the shade of the classroom to make collaborative terracotta figures and beasts. Once these have been fired they will be hidden amongst the shrubs and wild areas to extend the children’s storytelling and learning.
Great to be back at Leominster Infants School working with the children and staff. We made a huge oak tree inspired by water and the seasons – all part of science week.
The opportunity gave me the chance to snap some of the other collaborative work we’d produced in visits gone by.
Here’s the amazing Rainbow Fish made a couple of years ago. Top marks to arts co-ordinator Barbara who did such a fab job of mounting and installing the tiles.

Strawberries and Cream provide the theme for the 1.5hr sessions of creativity and fun.
Each child will learn how to make a bowl on the potter’s wheel – a fantastic
experience if ever there was one. The youngsters will then be encouraged to fill
their pot with modelled strawberries and other summer fruit – all topped off
with a dollop of white slip to complete the effect.
The 1.5 hr workshop sessions are designed for two age groups – 4-8yrs on Wed 29th and 9-12yrs on Thurs 30th May (although younger or older siblings will never be turned away!)
