Unseen process

Workshop participants pots being glazed at Eastnor Pottery by pottery employeeOnce all the lovely things our customers make have dried thoroughly, they are subjected to what’s known as a bisque firing. The pots are in the kiln for approx. 24hrs. Once the kiln has been unpacked the individual pieces are carefully dipped into a large bucket of glaze (a suspension of un-melted glass particles in water) Once they’ve had their bottoms lovingly wiped to avoid them fusing to the kiln shelves, they are packed into the kiln and taken up to temperatures averaging around 1080 degrees. A couple of days later, the pots emerge from the kiln bright & shiny ready or collection or dispatch – PHEW!

The young lady featured is starting school very soon and would so would no longer need looking after during the day. They made a terracotta plant pot bejewelled with butterflies and bugs. What a thoughtful, unique and very special gift.

Flying Potter @ Eastnor Castle

Child making a clay feather at Eastnor Castle during the Summer holidays.Loved my annual residency at Eastnor Castle. Spent x4 sunny days working with hundreds of children and families making collaborative terracotta owls. The results of which will be fired and displayed online and in the Dry Cleaners window in Ledbury high street sometime in October. In the meantime please take a look at all the clay fun photos on our FB page. We’ve created an album for each day – which day did you go?
