Don’t we all just #LovePottery

Children get to make a pot on the potterywheel at eastnor potteryBig well done to all the young potters who joined us for our Valentines themed, potter’s wheel workshop sessions for children in the February 1/2 term.

Children as young at two and a half took to the wheel to create heart shaped pots, filled with clay models of stuff they love. There were a few busts of girlfriends and boyfriends ;) but on the whole, the young artists opted for pets, games and the occasional Big Mac 7 fries!

The half term holiday was quite a protracted affair this year as different educational authorities took different weeks off. We facilitated two Wednesdays of workshops in an attempt to accommodate our customers from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

The next children’s sessions take place in the Easter holidays on Wednesday 19th April and are entitled ‘SPRING INTO SCULPTURE’ We’ll be running 1.5 hr sessions starting at 11.30am for the 4-8yrs and 2pm for the 9-12 age group. That said, we don’t expect people to drive out to us twice on the same day and younger/older siblings can attend either session. SEN Schools visit Eastnor Pottery

Sarah Williams works with student from Alderman Knight Special School at Eastnor PotteryClay is such an accessible material, whatever your age or ability you can make your mark.

Its universal appeal makes it an excellent material for children with additional educational needs to work with and express themselves.

In the week leading up to half term we were fortunate to welcome students from two local special schools to our studio.

Sarah has been working with Alderman Knight School in Tewkesbury to create a Cheshire Cat tile panel and although most of her sessions have taken place at school, staff agreed it would be beneficial for the students to create some of the tiles at Eastnor Pottery.

Two days later we entertained students from The Vale of Evesham School. Each year Ms Barton drives her class of between 10-14 students over the boarder to make coil pot mugs with us. These are then fired, glazed and collected by the whole class in time for Mother’s Day – the perfect handmade gift.

Upcycled art and clay figures

ledbury assemblage artist alans creations and clay figuresAlan is a talented local artist and professional tinkerer who constructs his quirky art objects from salvaged materials and found objects. Every so often, he’ll book into the Pottery to create some clay figures to incorporate into his upcycled art.

We love his enthusiasm and creative flair and this little steam engine demonstrates oodles of both. Wouldn’t want to mess with the drivers though!

School trip to Eastnor Pottery & Eastnor Castle

Leigh and Bransford Primary School at Eastnor PotteryWe were delighted to welcome Leigh and Bransford Primary School to the Pottery in the last week of January.

KS1 split into two groups, one toured the Castle while the other made clay mott & bailey coil pots with us.

In the afternoon, the groups swapped over, ensuring everbody got to sample all aspects of the Eastnor experience on their school outing.

This is what the school art co-ordinator had to say about the visit:

“They had such a wonderful day and learnt so much from you guys! They cannot wait to get their creations back when they are ready! Thank you so much, I and my colleagues will recommend you to anyone”

Bucket list at the ready!

potterywheel workshop at Eastnor Pottery Feb 2017Making a pot on the potter's wheel at Eastnor Pottery & The Flying PotterTo make a pot on the potter’s wheel is one of those ‘I’ve always wanted to try that!’ activities. Here at Eastnor Pottery we pride ourselves on being a prime enabler for these aspirations and as a consequence, we see more than our fair share of first-timers take to the wheel.

Last Saturday was no exception. All x6 of our one day potter’s wheel participants had never experienced the wheel before.

After a morning of getting to grips with the ‘five easy steps’, the group was encouraged to scale up and make bigger pots. By the close everybody was astounded at the quality of their efforts. Well done everybody!
