The Great Pottery Throw Down

Group Shot of Great Pottery Throw Down Judges and Participants

Hats off to BBC2 and Love Productions for starting a pottery participation revolution!

As the series aired in the run up to Christmas our phones and email accounts just got hotter and hotter. Come Christmas Eve we had recorded record sales of our one day and weekend pottery courses and, as we progress through January, demand hasn’t discipated one jot.

We are currently running a potter’s wheel workshop of some description every weekend for the foreseable future.

If you needed any more proof – here’s an extract from The Guardian 6th Dec 2015:

“Hobbycraft is reporting that sales of kiln-drying clay have risen 40% since the show started. Sales of air-drying clay, which doesn’t require you to have access to a kiln, are up 60%. Evening classes in ceramics are at capacity up and down the country. If you are thinking of signing up, prepare for a waiting list.”

Remaining dates (you’ve gotta be quick!) and further details of our potter’s wheel days and weekends can be found here.

Ethan does raku

Pots made by Ethan from Eastnor Pottery firing in Raku style workshop

Ethan recently sampled the delights of RAKU firing with our friend and fellow potter Bill Moore  in North Somerset. We first met Bill as undergraduate ceramics students. Sarah and myself studied at Bath, whilst Bill developed his potting skills down the road at Bristol. Post graduation we used to employ Bill’s exceptional throwing skills if we had a large order of pots to full-fill. Details of Bill’s classes can be seen by visiting his Clayability website.

This is what Ethan is what he had to say about his experience:

“I was immediately excited because ever since starting pottery as an apprentice here just over two years ago, I have had a fascination with the striking glazes that come from Raku firings. The day exceeded all my expectations tenfold. First of I have to thank Bill for giving me so much information throughout the day, and thanks to John as well as they were both such nice people to spend the day with. All of my pots despite a couple of breaks through the process came out better than I could of hoped for and will make fantastic gifts for my family at Christmas. These were by far my best pots to date and I want to keep them close to myself and family to cherish them for a long while as a reminder where I have started. I plan to keep exploring the huge world of raku glazing as its random effects and spectral range of colours are just what I want from a glaze. Unexpected results from an unexpected day.”

Mudrunner Classic 2015

Eastnor Pottery Team Photo after Mudrunner 2015Terribly sad that the 2015 Mudrunner Classic held in October was likely to be the last Mudrunner event held in Eastnor. Team Eastnor Pottery have taken part in the race nearly as long as we’ve been making the clay medals presented to those who actually make it to the finish line. We’ll be very sad to see it go and must congratulate Mudrunner organisers D3, on the magnificent job of facilitating the event over the past six years. #sad

Potter in the press

Eastnor Pottery and the Flying Potter Ceramic Sound ProjectOnce again, Jon Williams (the flying potter) has been in the local news. The most recent article in the Hereford Times looked at Jon’s collaboration with three Hereford Museums to produce interactive ceramic artworks for visitors to discover and play.

Details of Jon’s creative journey can be found by visiting his blog.

Eastnor Pottery 15 minutes of fame

Our Digitial Marketing Apprentice Jack, spotted this opportunity whilst scrolling through the emails.  iZettle have invited their small business customers to create a short video clip advertising their own products and services. The 7 lucky winners of 15 Seconds of Fame will then have their advert broadcast on television. Ethan directed, filmed and produced the ad with Jack providing the voice over.
