Magic moonbeams

mum watches young potter experience the potter's wheel at moonbeams 3 exhibition at MAC birminghamGreat moonbeams session at the Midlands Arts Centre on Tuesday. This was a FREE free flow, no booking required, session with parents and young children trying their hand at the potter’s wheel. Check out this beautiful series of photos taken by project manager Janette Bushall – prams, pots @ babies @ mac – nice!

Highlight for me was meeting the family of artists responsible for the amazing Playmakers interactive exhibition at MAC. If you have young children definitely one not to be missed.

Festival of Cultures

delicious curry at festival of cultures at edward iv grammer school for boys in birmingham july 2012One of my workshop highlights is the annual trip to King Edward vi Grammar School for Boys Aston, Birmingham. I’m there working with the students during the day and then supplying potter’s wheel sessions for friends and family of the pupils in the evening.

The whole event is called Festival of Cultures and continues, year in year out, to be a raging success, not only for the boys but for the many activity suppliers like myself. Organisation of the whole affair is the responsibility of the 6th formers who are motivated, polite and very helpful, and to cap it all you get fed too: Parents set up food stands in the main hall where you can sample cousine from all over the world. The portions are generous and always served with pride, a smile and a whole lot of love. The curries are to die for and the cake stand offers a mouthwatering selection of home baked deliciousness!

Yum yum, looking forward to next year already.

On your marks, get set……

moonbeams early years creativity project at the mac in birminghamLove this photo of a line of young artists, clay creations in hand and ready to march to the shelves to display their artwork.

Moonbeams 3 is a creative project in Birmingham valuing very young children’s art. I’ve been working with Nursery groups from all over the city at MAC, Cannon Hill Park. The children have been placing their potter’s wheel inspired creations, freshly made onto specially designed shelves as part of the moonbeams3 exhibition

Kate Green has been documenting the project – check out this brilliant shot of hands on the wheel taken at one of the sessions.

Peter Wynne Wilson hasalso been working with the young people at MAC, recording their stories from his creative workshops. View the wonderful results by looking here.

The Gruffalo

clay gruffalow made by a talented member of staff at brearley & teviot nursery school birminghamAn amazing clay gruffalo skillfully made by administator extroardinaire Marie from the fab Brearley & Teviot Nursery School in Birmingham.

It took Marie just 15mins during her break to create this masterpiece during a mad busy open day at the Children’s Centre.

I was stationed on the playground throwing pots with parents and children.

Early years clay week

very young potters at washwood heath nursery school get to grips with the potters wheelIt’s been a week dominated by working with the under 5’s. As well as the fab moonbeams3 project at MAC, I also found myself at the totally creative hub of early years joy that is Washwood Heath Nursery School.

As it was the last time this academic year I’d be working with the children we decided to offer the potter’s wheel as a free flow activity, outside on the playground.
