A day at the wheel.

Very fond of the class of 22nd September 2018 :)

making pottery at eastnor pottery herefordshire

Seven nicer individuals you’d be hard pressed to meet, spent the day learning how to make pottery on the potter’s wheel. It was a productive day with everybody filling their boards with fantastic shapes and forms, in fact we’ve never seen the pile of disregarded ‘learning’ pots look so small.

At the close, we ask participants to select their two or three favorite pieces to be fired, glazed and posted out in a months time. A difficult task at the best of times but made even harder by the sheer volume of super shapes. Most people couldn’t bare to part with their creations and payed the extra to have them finished in the kiln.

If you fancy spending a day behind the wheel please take a look at our web page dedicated to our one day and weekend courses. £130 for the day and £240 for the weekend.

Choctoberfest 2018! Children’s 1/2 term workshops

hot chocolate inspired pottery fun for children in october half term at eastnor pottery and the flying potterWe are delighted to announce details of our fun and creative themed workshop sessions for children in the October half term.

CHOCTOBERFEST borrows from the Bavarian festival of all things beer but given a much more age appropriate spin!

Participants will use proper clay to make and paint a hot chocolate mug using the coil-pot technique. The creations will be left with us to be fired and glazed so when the young potter’s collect their creations from the studio approx. one month later, they’ll be able to drink hot chocolate and marshmallows from them.

There’s nothing quite so satisfying as drinking from a cup or mug made by your own fair hand. Sarah the potter has been making fun and functional tableware for 30 years and still gets a kick from using one of her own creations. It’ll be lovely for the children on a chilly autumnal evening to wrap their hands around a steaming cup of cocoa knowing they’ve hand crafted it.

The workshops designed for children as young as 4 years take place on two consecutive Wednesdays to account for the different half terms. Gloucestershire will get to potter on the 24th and Hereford & Worcester on the 31st.

1.5 hr sessions commence at 11.30am and 2pm and are tailored for two age groups: 4-8yrs in the mornings and 9-12yrs in the afternoons. These age ranges are designed as a rough guide and are not strictly adhered to as younger and older siblings are always welcome to participate on either session.

Places cost £15 per head with a 10% discount for x3 or more places booked. Telephone and email booking essential: Tel: 01531 633886 e: admin@eastnorpottery.co.uk

Leon’s amazing creation.

Thrown and assembled wheel thrown pot made by young man with aspergers at eastnor potteryLeon’s one of regular and valued customers. Every Tuesday he spends an hour or so with his support worker or mum at the Pottery making and decorating pots on the wheel.

For the past seven weeks he’s been working on a single, ‘£100′ pot. Each visit is spent making a separate section on the wheel which is then joined to the one made the previous week.

Over seven weeks, the pot has grown organically and sprouted several handles and palm tree additions. The last couple of weeks have been spent painting the sculpture in coloured under glazes and slips. It emerged resplendent from the kiln a few weeks ago and we think it’s brill! Here’s a link to a short video showing the pot in all it’s 3D glory: Young man with aspergers makes amazing pottery

Boosted by the success, Leon is onto his next project – a ‘£200′ pot!

Ones that didn’t quite make the leader’s board!

rejected pots left over from potter's wheel workshopsIt’s always an extremely productive day for participants on our one day potter’s wheel workshops. Everybody makes loads and loads of work.

At the day comes to a close, we encourage participants to choose their favourite pieces to be fired and glazed.

The rejected ones are plucked from their boards and piled high in a collaborative tower before being wedged into a soft lump ready to be made into pots again and again and again! :)
