Digging up the past

market gardening fork designed in badsey worcestershire to deal with heavy clay soilThese antique and curious looking gardening tools are providing inspiration for an arts project at Badsey First School in Worcestershire.

Badsey Historical Society are working in partnership with the school and Eastnor Pottery to produce a collaborative tile panel exploring and celebrating Badsey’s market gardening history.

Once fired and mounted on boards the tiles will form three giant trees: An apple, pear and plum. The works of art will grace an exterior wall surrounding the playground for everybody to admire.

The featured double pronged fork was specialy developed in Badsey to prevent the local, heavy clay soil sticking to the more traditional 3 or 4 pronged tool.

We’ll publish a few photos of the children’s handywork as some of the designs are exceptional – watch this space!

Working with clay must be an aspirational thing for young ladies of a certain age as we’ve had a run on children’s pottery birthday parties for girls turning 8 years old.

Erin and her friends made ‘owl & the pussy cat’ models on the potter’s wheel whilst Catherine and her buddies opted for the ‘colourful critters option’

What a whoppa!

chief hen natalie shows the girls how to do it at her pottery hen party at eastnor pottery nr ledbury herefordshireTop hen Natalie (pictured here) swore that she’d never had a go on the potter’s wheel before – pull the other one Natalie!

Natalie and her friends were here at Eastnor Pottery on the weekend throwing pots as part of her hen party celebrations.

As we have eight wheels and there were eight participants, each hen was assigned their own wheel for the afternoon. All the girls grasped the technique really well but Nat really excelled – contract of employment in the post!

As is customary on these occasions we’ve published some photos on our Facebook page.
