Clay play outside

this little textured clay slab was created by a young potter at the inspiring and creative early years setting of washwood heath nursery school birminghamThe sun really did shine down on Washwood Nursery School this week and although we’d planned lots of exciting clay activities in the classroom, it was no match for the fantastic weather. Naturaly, and quite right too, all the young people headed for the door as soon as it was free flow.

If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad and as a champion of fresh air clay exploration, I decided to join them.

We squashed the clay into and onto all sorts of surfaces collecting marks and textures on biscuit sized slabs – McVities eat your heart out!

Some of the children who usually choose not to engage with the clay in the classroom took great delight in hurling lumps at the ground or using their whole body weight to squash it beneath their elbows – a much more physical and equally valid approach -great stuff!

Ellie the collaborative terracotta elephant!

Ellie The Collaborative Elephant! This magnificent beast will be winging it’s way to the school children who created it.

Earlier this term I worked with the whole of Hesters Way Primary School, each class creating a different terracotta animal to be installed in the School grounds.

Have a look at the butterfly, caterpillar, tortoise, owl and dragon.

Pottery hen party overdrive!

Lizzie's Hen Party WorkshopLizzie's Hen Party WorkshopLorna's Hen Party Workshop

Saturday was a busy day on the pottery hen party front. X2 lovely groups enjoyed throwing pots on the potter’s wheel, making coil-pots and generally having a fab and creative time.

The afternoon group decided to split themselves into two teams adding a competitive element to the proceedings – Blondes vrs brunettes. Team Blonde clearly exploding any myths and stereotypes there may have been regarding the fairer haired species!

Photos of all the clay fun can be seen by visiting the links below:

Caroline’s clay babies

Clay Play WorkshopA few months ago I had the pleasure of working with Caroline and her son on the potter’s wheel at a drop-in event at the Courtyard Theatre in Hereford. They enjoyed the experience so much that Caroline organised her friends and booked a private clay play session at Eastnor Pottery.

The young potter’s aged 10-15 months enjoyed the potter’s wheel, squidged soft clay between their fingers and made a few hand & foot prints as well!

Children’s pottery in 1/2 term – 6 & 7 June 2012

1/2 term creative fun at eastnor pottery and the flying potter herefordshireIn recognition of her majesty the queen’s diamond jubilee,  we are proud to release details of our forthcoming children’s pottery workshop sessions in the ½ term holiday.

‘Convertible’ is the all-encompassing theme and young participants will get to model a grand, open-top carriage with HRH Elizabeth  perched inside…..or for those weary of the diamond celebrations, a sports car with the roof down or even a vintage vehicle with a be-goggled racer at the wheel!

Part of the making process will include a go on the potter’s wheel, which is always a firm favourite with visitors to the Pottery.

The 1.5 hr workshop sessions are designed for two age groups, 4-8yrs on Wednesday and 9-12yrs on Thursday (although younger and older siblings will never be turned away.) The fun starts at 11.30am & 2pm on Wed and 11.30am on Thursday and the cost is £15 per child with a 10% discount for x3 or more places booked. Places can only be reserved by telephoning 01531 633886 or email: admin@eastnorpottery.co.uk

Once the Children’s creations have been given a stunning, terracotta firing, they will be ready for collection from the Pottery three weeks later.
