Teambuilding in Brum

Eastnor Pottery working with Autodesk on Potter's Wheel

The Flying Potter works in all kinds of places, sometimes in the most unlikely settings you could ever imagine to find a pop-up potter’s studio. Thursday afternoon was no exception. Ethan and myself were summoned to The Hyatt Regency hotel in Birmingham to deliver a 3hr potter’s wheel teambuilding breakout session with an international software company in one of the hotel’s suites.

The client who we had the good fortune to work with is going through an expansion process and the board of directors met for a couple of days to take stock and discuss the changes. We were employed to facilitate a breakout pottery session before dinner.

In addition to experiencing the potter’s wheel, the participants co-constructed a Corporate Crest, illustrating the variety of the organisation’s products and customer reach.

The client was extremely pleased with the activity and commented:

“Jon thanks for a fab event. Everone loved it!! I would definately recommend you for future events.”

1666 & all that…

Love my visits to Woodlands Infant School in Shirley, Solihull. On this occasion I worked with year 2, encouraging each pupil to make a slab built house reminiscent of the architecture common at the time of the Great Fire of London.Smashing pottery house made with Eastnor Pottery

Quite an advanced clay project for sure, but the children’s hollow houses look all the better for being dented and squashed!

The clay houses will be fired (appropriately so) and returned to the school later in the term.

Settling at Washwood Heath Nursery

Eastnor Pottery and the Flying Potter at Washwood Heath Nursery

The first week at Nursery School can be quite a step for both child and parent. Washwood Nursery School in Birmingham have a caring and innovative approach to help ease the transition from from home to nursery life.

Staff invite parents and carers to remain in school, but in a separate hall whilst the children have their first sessions in the classroom. If a child is too upset, it means the adults are not too far away to offer solace. Craft activities (basket making and pottery to name but two) are offered to the parents to keep them occupied.

The grown-ups are always appreciative and comment on the therapeutic and calming effects of working with the artists and their materials. Some of them attend repeatedly even if their child has well adjusted to the new routine.

Some of the dads who are reluctant at first, soon get involved, particularly enjoying the potter’s wheel and the competitive potential. Comparing his work with another dad, one beaming parent proclaimed:

“Mine will last centuries – yours will last only decades!”

Creative summer term 2015

So so busy towards the back end of the Summer term we didn’t get the chance to publish some of the amazing pottery projects we undertook with schools and early year’s settings, in and around the West Midlands. Here are a couple of examples:
King Edward VI School Aston in Birmingham held their Festival of Cultures event on the 3rd July 2015. We worked with groups of boys enabling them to realize some of their creative aspirations in clay.
Elmley Castle First School near Evesham Worcester invited Jon the Potter to work with the children to make a collaborative 3D clay sculpture based upon their natural environment and personal interests.
