The power of pottery

Jon Williams working on the potter's wheel with a student at Sunfield residential SchoolPeriodically, I have the privilege to work at Sunfield Residential School in Stourbridge. The school cares for vulnerable young people who have severe and complex educational needs, such as Autism.

One of the many aspects I’ve really come to value about my visits to the school is the opportunity to work one to one with the students. Every interaction, how matter how varied, slight or short is all the better for the dedicated engagement.

Sometimes the students make huge journeys in confidence, creativity and understanding in a very short time frame. Here is an extract from my scribbled session notes from one such interaction that lasted approx 30 mins:

‘J’ refused to take part at the beginning and sat wheel-side watching the demo, arms firmly crossed and coat well and truly buttoned up. Member of staff ‘A’ takes a turn on the wheel to encourage him to participate. We ask ‘J’ what shape he would like to see being made on the wheel. “plate!” ‘J’ watches as I make a plate. Once it is completed, we adjourn to the floor to form letters from small coils of clay – he touches the clay for the first time, progressing to picking the clay letters up and attaching them to the soft clay plate. The letters spell out his name. We discuss the ceramic process and firing, showing him a shop brought mug and telling him this is what his plate will look like when he gets it back – would he like to make a mug? “yes” Coat off, old shirt on (too small) so it comes off again and then he sits at the wheel, makes a guided pot properly touching the spinning wet clay and ending up with his hands covered in slip. We then make a handle together and add the handle to the freshly thrown form – magic!

Love Pottery!

Kids pottery workshops in Feb 1/2 term 2017

Children’s pottery workshops in 1/2 term. Wed 15 & Wed 22 Feb 2017.

We’re delighted to announce details of our fun, creative and valentines themed children’s workshop sessions scheduled for the February half term holidays.

#LovePottery is the working title and youngsters will get to sample the delights of the potter’s wheel as well as learning other clay modeling techniques.

The workshops, designed for children as young as 4 years take place on two consecutive Wednesdays to incorporate the different ½ term holidays planned by Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire educational authorities. 15th Feb for Hereford & Gloucester and 22nd Feb for Worcester so hopefully, no one will miss out.

Participants will be able to make a clay sculpture inspired by something they hold dear to their heart. It doesn’t have to be an individual, it could be an animal, vegetable or mineral! Seriously though, the children’s artwork could be based upon a computer game, favorite sport or a much loved pet.

The children’s creations will be fired and ready for collection from the Pottery approx. one month later.

1.5 hr sessions commence at 11.30am and 2pm and are tailored for two age groups. 4-8yrs in the mornings and 9-12yrs in the afternoons. Although, these age ranges are not strictly adhered to as younger and older siblings are always welcome to participate on either session.

Places cost £15 per head with a 10% discount for x3 or more places booked. Telephone and email booking essential: Tel: 01531 633886 e: admin@eastnorpottery.co.uk

Experience pottery in 2017

Potter's wheel workshop at Eastnor Pottery Herefordshire2016 was our busiest year to date working with aspiring potters of all ages and abilities here at Eastnor Pottery & The Flying Potter. The popularity in pottery in 2016 was in part, inspired by BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down programme broadcast in the Autumn of 2015. Man, the power of television!

We facilitated no less than 50 weekend and day potter’s wheel workshops – phew!!!

Although we were working ‘flat out’ delivering the best possible potter’s wheel experience for our visitors, we are all in agreement, it was a genuine pleasure to work with each and every one of our customers.

Our attention is now firmly fixed on our 2017 potter’s wheel workshop dates and we are looking forward to sharing the therapeutic benefits of working with clay with the new cohort of potential potter’s.

Here’s what some our most recent potter’s wheel workshop participants have had to say about their Eastnor Pottery Experience:

“Brilliant day”

Attended the one day workshop at the weekend. It was great fun. Highly recommend it. The staff were great, so helpful and patient! Teas & coffees plus biscuits on arrival and through out the day. Lovely lunch provided. It was a very warm welcoming and creative atmosphere. If I lived nearer I would be attending more workshops. And the great thing was actually made some pots! Great experience. Go for it.

Thank you Jon for a brilliant 2 days. I would highly recommend coming on your course and really pleased we did the whole weekend as we made some wonderful creations. I had so much fun, getting splattered with clay, making unusual shaped pots and eating a delicious lunch. The individual attention was great and the pace of learning was perfect. I had no idea we would be carving our pots and painting them into something that will last us forever.
My daughter really enjoyed it too! Her pots were beautiful and she felt a great sense of achievement. we will be back to do it again as you were all such lovely people. Big hug.

“Amazing 2 day Potter’s Wheel. Workshop”

My sister and I have just spent the last 2 days having an absolutely fantastic time at Eastnor Pottery on a Potter’s wheel workshop; a wonderful birthday gift from my son. Day one was spent throwing as many pots as we could muster and day two was spent turning and painting our selected items. Throughout the two days we had excellent tuition from Jon, Ethan and Jack, who were very patient …….they needed to be as we had no idea what we were doing ! The experience included a buffet lunch which was beautifully prepared by Sarah. We have met some lovely people who came from far and wide to learn the art of potting.
Eastnor Pottery have drop in sessions as well as booked sessions so is accessible for everyone and I would absolutely recommend a visit here.
Thank you Jon, Sarah, Ethan and Jack. I can’t wait to see the finished products.

Free Wheeling success

Visito at free potter's wheel event makes a pot under the guidence of potter Ethan from Eastnor Pottery young participant at Free Wheeling potters wheel event at Eastnor PotteryWe had such a lovely couple of days working with participants who took advantage of our FREE potter’s wheel event ‘Free Wheeling’ 16 & 17 Dec 2017.

Last year, around this time we took part in a national #GetCreative campaign called Hey Clay! – A Crafts Council and BBC initiative designed to get the general public making pottery. Artists and arts organisations all over the country were encouraged to open their doors and offer complimentary clay sessions to individuals and families.

Although Hey Clay wasn’t repeated this year, we were so inspired by the event, it prompted us to offer something similar in 2016.

Our customers will be pleased to know, ‘Free Wheeling’ looks like it’s going to become a regular fixture in our workshop calendar. It’s a win win event – visitors get to make a pot on the potter’s wheel for free and we get to tell them about all the fantastic things we do here in Eastnor and in the wider community.

Hey Clay is scheduled for a welcomed return 7-9 April 2017 – can’t wait!
